Vitamin water has become increasingly popular over the years. They provide a delicious way to take your vitamins, keep you hydrated and some even provide a much needed energy boost. Vitamin water is designed to provide a wide variety of vitamins and minerals to supplement your daily diet, however dentally speaking, they aren’t so attractive.
First off, most brands of vitamin water contain a large amount of sugar which aids in the formation of plague, which harbors the bacteria that causes tooth decay and gum disease. Also, many brands are high in Vitamin C which is ascorbic acid. The consumption of too many acidic foods or beverages can erode away your the enamel of your teeth and lead to yellowing, tooth sensitivity, grooves in the sides of the teeth and eventually worn down teeth.
Although these drinks have been supplemented with vitamins and minerals, which can be just as harmful as too many sugary sodas and other sports drinks. So if you do consume vitamin water, try to rinse with water afterwards and limit consumption as much as possible.
Keep in mind that tooth enamel that’s lost to decay or erosion won’t grow back. While we can repair any damage, the best solution is prevention.
