truth about toothpaste, omaha cosmetic dentist, Dr. BoldingWe are all familiar with toothpaste (or at least we should be). However, have you ever wondered what toothpaste really does? Especially with all the different types to choose from on the store shelves.

  • What does fluoride toothpaste do?
Fluoride fights too decay and strengthens tooth enamel.
  • Can tartar fighting toothpaste prevent gum disease?
Unfortunately no. Tartar fighting toothpaste can only reduce additional tartar buildup above the gumline, but not below it. This is why regular flossing and routine teeth cleanings are imperative.
  • Are whitening toothpastes okay for sensitive teeth?
No. Most whitening toothpastes contain a higher level of abrasives. Instead use a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth.
  • Does The American Dental Association test toothpastes?
Yes. The ADA Seal of Acceptance means they meet specific criteria for safety and effectiveness.
  • Why do children’s toothpastes come in fun flavors?
Yes. Fun flavors encourage brushing in children. However, use only a pea size amount and don’t let them swallow too much.

simple flossing steps, omaha cosmetic dentist, Dr. BoldingDid you know flossing for 3 minutes, once a day significantly decreases your chances of gum disease and increases the overall health of your mouth? Flossing is essential to clean between your teeth and around your gumline where gum disease originates.

Choose a time that works best for your schedule, like bedtime or first thing in the morning as well as a floss that works best for you and your oral anatomy. Floss comes in a variety of flavors and thicknesses, so there are options to choose from.

Follow these simple steps and floss your way to a perfect smile:

  • Floss each tooth thoroughly with a clean section of floss.
  • Wind 18″ of floss around the middle fingers of each hand. Pinch 1-2″ of floss between your thumbs and index fingers.
  • Use your thumbs to glide the floss between your upper teeth. Then repeat for your lower teeth.
  • Use a zigzag motion to guide the floss between each tooth.
  • Partially wrap the floss around the side of each tooth.
  • Then gently slide the floss up and down against each tooth surface and under the gumline.

Flossing is often overlooked, however it is just as important as brushing your teeth and should be completed at least once a day. Just think you are only 3 minutes away from a healthy smile!

prenatal dental care to prevent gum disease - Dr. Jared BoldingWith pregnancy comes great hormonal changes that can trigger health problems like periodontal (gum) disease. Research has shown that periodontal bacteria can actually cross through the placental barrier, which is why it is so important that you maintain your dental cleanings as part of your prenatal dental care for both mommy and baby.

Why periodontal is a risk for pregnant women:

  • Periodontal disease may be linked to pre-term delivery, low birth weight and low weight for gestational age. The greater the periodontal disease, the greater the potential risk.
  • Periodontal disease may be associated with an increased risk for toxemia, a condition where there is an abrupt rise in blood pressure and the presence of toxins.
  • Almost half of women with gestational diabetes also have periodontal disease.
  • In patients with diabetes, periodontal disease during pregnancy may affect blood sugar control which make result in periodontal risks.

In its early stages, gum disease has no symptoms. However, gum disease typically consists of red, swollen or bleeding gums that can leave a bad taste in your mouth and cause bad breath. Protect yourself with regular dental care and through daily brushing and flossing.

In general, smiles are one of the most important aspects of making a first impression. A smile that shows yellow or graying teeth, chipped teeth or receding gumlines has a negative impact on how old we look.

What most adults fail to realize is that over time, our smiles are not as bright as they once were due to use, diet and general health. All these factors can add years to your smile and your appearance.

We can help you restore your smile and improve any wear and tear caused by aging. Through teeth whitening, composite fillings, veneers as well as bridges and crowns, we can give your smile the makeover it needs to make you look years younger.

Gum Disease In Relation to Heart Attack, Diabetes, and Cancer Risk

The importance of your periodontal and oral health cannot be overemphasized.

Recent studies indicated that the association between heart disease and gum disease is at least as strong as the link between heart disease and cholesterol, body weight, or smoking.  The studies have also suggested that people with periodontal disease are more likely to develop diabetes.

Inflammation in their blood has also been linked with cancer.

What is gum disease or periodontal disease?  It is an infection of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth.

The studies also states that although it is premature to suggest good oral hygiene can help prevent heart disease, diabetes or cancer—periodontal disease should nevertheless be treated.

Regular recare appointments with our office and daily homecare will help you maintain your oral and overall health.
